Default Jeep over heating BAD!

My jeep on the way home today was starting to get really hot and no signals came on that it was hot or anything.
but all of a sudden the jeep shut off,the steering column locked up, and smoke/steam started rising like crazy from the front area of the engine bay..
a few people have told me that it was probably the water pump? anyone else agree or have any other suggestions?
and does anyone know how much a water pump from a 1991 jeep cherokee cost? :/

Thanks!

It is possible and easy to check, see if there is any play in it,but what concerns me is why your steering locked up,that should not happen at anytime until you lock it,that is very weird and scary.
