No, and no. You have a something majorly wrong with your Jeep to use that much fuel. You can search for one of the zillion other bad fuel economy threads or start your own, hijacking is impolite.

However being a 1996 first thing I'd check is the MAP vacuum tube, tire pressure, and all of your tuneup bits.

Yep. Big time.

IF he's really getting that kind of mileage. I'm skeptical.

Actually, the first thing to check is how you are "calculating" your fuel economy.

See my earlier post.

I see thread after thread on this, and other forums, where people are complaining about their gas mileage and are going by the "fill ups per mile" method, which is worse than completely useless.

How could it be worse? Because it will make you think you know what you are getting, and it will not. It's not a valid method for calculating MPG. It will lie to you. It's not even close to accurate.

If you aren't calculating your MPGs by miles traveled as measured by a correct odometer, and the fuel amount pumped in, you have no idea what your MPGs are and you should STOP trying to solve your MPG problem.

Why?

You may not have one!

If you've done the valid calculations, and you really do have a problem, then it's time to go to the basic tune up items. If that doesn't work, THEN start looking at more oddball problems.

Oh, and don't listen to anybody who tells you it's the ethanol or the cold weather. Those are not going to cause a 30 or 50 per cent drop in MPGs.
