I have a 98 Cherokee sport. I have replaced the oil pressure sensor, the NSS, and the TPS but every time I put in reverse it dies. It is throwing codes 0700 and 0705. It starts in park and neutral and runs fine in any gear but reverse. It does have a bunch of electrical issues. Previous owner had a remote start and aftermarket cruise that they took off before I got it. The gauges occasionally will stop working as well the speakers. The brake lights didn't work when I got it but I got those fixed. Do I have a torque converter issue, an electrical issue or is it something else? I am ready to take it to a real mechanic but I am also ready to just sell the damn thing so I don't want to invest more money in it.

 

Unplug the TCM and shift it manually to verify if it's electronic or mechanical. It's possibly crossed wires... maybe the TCC lockup solenoid is getting engaged in reverse? It always sucks trying to undo someone's Jethro-engineering. Good luck.

Ikes, you need to get a Factory Service Manual (FSM) for your year, and just start going through one circuit at a time putting things back to stock. You won't know where you are otherwise.
Start with anything that is obviously hacked, of course.

Try agreen's suggestion first to differentiate, I'd say.

 

I am right there with you man. They said don't buy a 97. Wish I saw those videos before I spent like 5500 dollars.

 

Doesn't matter which year you have. If some idiot hacked the wiring, that's the issue. Not the Jeep's issue.

 

Look at the CPS wiring. Is it close to a place it could short when reverse is engaged and the engine moves?
Are the engine to trans bolts tight?
Try wiggling electrical harnesses/plugs at idle and see if you can replicate the issue.

 

That's what really sucks. Mechanically it's in great shape. Electric is the only real issue but it's a big one

I think I got the Jeep fixed. You're not going to believe what it was. When I hooked the brake lights back up I didn't put this ground back on. After I put it back on there the things running like a champ now. I can't believe it was something so simple.

 

That's the ground for the rear lights and fuel pump.

 

Makes sense now.
