Hi folks,
my Jeep did the dirty on me today. I was on the way to the vet with my hound and it just cut out completely. The fuel pump has started sounding "growly" recently so I switched to gas (propane
) and she started up just fine.
After the appointment at the vet the Jeep started just fine on petrol (gas
) but I switched and ran home on propane anyway because it's cheaper and the engine was up to temp.
OK, I suspect my fuel pump is on the way out - but do they cause a complete loss of power then come back to life? I know that I'll need to get one soon, but...
Am I better off looking at CPS? this has happened three times now - running on petrol/gas each time, but I don't know if that was coincidence.I do have a poor idle which makes me suspect CPS.
The other slight complication is that the local Jeep dealer doesn't want to know about XJs. I asked them for a CCV cap and they just said "We don't carry stock for anything that old" so I'm looking at after-market parts unless I can find a site in the US that will ship to England.
Does this look reasonable?

thanks for your help!

Sounds like an intermittent connection somewhere. CPS is a likely place to look, but that'd cause trouble on LP gas too. May well be the fuel pump. There isn't really any 'reserve' in there, if the FP quits the engine will die as though you shut it off.
The CPS you have linked- no telling who made that or what the quality is. You might try this place for an OEM part:

Appears that they ship overseas if you pay by money order or wire transfer.

Might be a thing to check next time it cuts out: check if you hear the fuel pump 'prime' in the back when you turn the key to ON (not START).
After it cut out, did it start back up straight away, or did you have to let things cool down. Agree with Radi that the intermittent issue leans towards electrical rather than mechanical.
The rough idle could also be several other things and might not be related.

Hmm, sounds like I need to do some proper investigation then. Thanks for the help.
It started up right away, once I'd changed the LPG system into "emergency start mode" which took about 20s. The emergency start simply starts the engine on LPG. Normally it starts on petrol and switches over when it's sure that the evaporator is getting enough heat from the cooling system to prevent icing.
Come to think of it, all three times it has cut out, I've been going uphill. I wonder if there's a problem with the pickup in the replacement fuel tank. There was a decent amount of fuel in there though, it wasn't running on fumes.
