Default Jeep Cherokee XJ Vehicle Speed

Looking for a OEM Mopar/Crown speed sensor for 1987-1997 Jeep Cherokee AW4 automatic. Part number 83503722.

Willing to pay fair price for new, used, or NOS.

I thought I had one, but alas I looked and I don't. That sensor fits 2wd and 4wd AW4 auto trans 1987 to 1997. The sensor changed in 1998, becoming shorter and added an identical sensor at the front of the trans.

What's your issue? I've never seen one fail, but I have seen a few cases where the wire was damaged where it's clamped to the side of the trans. Dirt simple to test with an ohmmeter and rotating the shaft to see the switch open/close once per rev.

It’s currently in the shop right now due to shifting issues. Shop tested the sensor and said it was bad but trying to find one has been a nightmare.

The symptoms of a bad speed sensor would be not upshifting out of first at all if it were dead. Maybe shifting erraticly if it were intermittent.

The sensor itself is a reed relay type magnetic switch that closes when a magnet on a rotor goes by it, once per revolution. It's possible, but I've never seen it, that the magnet on the rotor that triggers the sensor fell off.

Instead of spending $110 for a crown replacement, is there a pull-n-save type junkyard near you? Or maybe email deadjeep.com and see if they'd pull one for you for cheap. It's easy to replace, although it's behind the stock transfer case shifter bracket.

I ordered a wiring loom with the sensor for Deadjeep, I messaged saying I needed the sensor intact. After a week without any shipping info, I emailed them and they said the sensor was broken. This was after I called them asking if they would sell just the sensor and them saying yes and then never got back to me. So haven’t had a great experience with them.

I posted on a Jeep Cherokee Facebook group and someone got back to me saying they have one.

Appreciate the help guys.

Some folks have had issues with DeadJeep not being responsive, myself included when they shipped a brake booster with rust holes. Supposedly they got themselves sorted out about a year ago.

You can find the Crown one new, but it's $100. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Crown-Aut...NCHE/719866037

Is it still in the shop? You can pull the fuse for the trans control module and shifter with the shifter if you need to. In fact, that's the first test to make sure it's mechanically working.

unfortunately it says I’m unavailable on that link. Yeah I pulled the TCM and just manually shifted it with no issues. I got a used one coming in so fingers crossed that solves the problem.
