Jeep Cherokee stuck in 4LO
I went offroading a little while ago and as I was leaving I found out that my jeep was stuck in 4Full Time. I put it in reverse and rolled back and gave it a push. it wouldn't go forward so out of curiosity gave it a little tug backwards and got it to 4LO. now it is stuck in 4LO and I have tried to backing up and going forward, it will not budge. does anyone have another method or idea of what is wrong?

Is the shift lever also stuck and will not move? Or does the lever move freely like it is not connected to anything?

UPDATE: backed it up and went forward a few more times and was able to get it out of 4LO and into Neutral. it will not come out of Neutral however.
yes the lever is stuck as well, it does not move freely.

That is a tough diagnoses from here. Could be simple or it could be a bent shift-fork. Could be spline-lock. Sometimes unlocking on pavement makes it more difficult due to the drive-line being in a bind.
If transfer case is stuck in neutral, try rolling jeep forward or back just an inch or two. Then try again.
My 242 gets stuck in 4wd sometimes (spline-lock) but the shift lever is never stuck. Driving in reverse unlocks it.

checked the shift linkages and to my knowledge they appear to be in good condition. could it be that transfer case is low on fluid? the jeep did sit for a little while before I got it.

You might have to get under the Jeep and try to shift it with a pair of channel locks or something.
Its always good practice to shift the Transfer Case threw all the gears every so often like maybe once a week or so as it seems to keep everything working smooth.

whoops a few days went by and I forgot to log on and update this. I did climb under and clean the linkages and the transfer case to get a better look. then I tapped the linkages with a hammer and was able to get it out of 4wd. I have made plans to change the transfer case fluid once it warms up.

Perhaps shift it at speed as was intended?
How's the fluid level and condition?
Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in CAPS are mine.
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I LET OFF THE GAS, THROW THE LEVER, TAP THE GAS AND LET OFF.
4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".
TO SHIFT OUT OF 4L, SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL WITH THE VEHICLE STOPPED, SHIFT THE TRANSFER CASE LEVER TO 2H, THEN THE TRANS TO D IF YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC, OR INTO FIRST GEAR WITH A MANUAL, AND CONTINUE ON.
