personally I think the 97-99's are the best if they have the 8.25 rear end which became a 29 spline in 97, before that it was only a 27 spline. Avoid dana 35's if you can. The 00's and 01's also had the 29 spline 8.25 in some of them, but they went to a low pinion dana 30 in the front, and the heads were prone to cracking. Some of the older jeeps had a vacuum disconnect in the front axle, I'd try to avoid that. Cup holders I believe were introduced in 97 as well.

Default I think 97-99 are best

These are good vehicles, but if you inquire about one with higher mileage, ask about any overheating issues. The cooling fans and waters pumps regularly go bad. They are not hard or too expensive to fix, but if a someone has drove too much during overheating you could have worse problems. Buy in the summer if you can wait, unless you live in hot area. Also, look under it and assume that there IS a problem if there are wet spots. The high mile one's often leak from the seals. If you do not mind some trouble now and again they will run forever.
