My 01 Cherokee has a slight grinding/rubbing noise from the front end. sounds like the brakes rubbing but they are self adjusting. any advice?

Have you been Wheelin' with it? Sometimes Dirt/rocks/sticks/gravel get stuck in between the pad and rotor. Also what about the dust shield? Could that be bent into your rotor?

Like previously stated, check for stuck caliper pins, sticky calipers in general, the caliper hose condition, debris stuck between pad/rotor, bent dust shield.
On top of all that, check your wheel bearings in the front for roughness and play, jack it up and jiggle the tires with your hands in the 12 and 6 oclock positions, with some force, if the tire moves, you may want to look into the bearing.
With the tire on and jacked up you can also just spin it to try to recreate the noise youre hearing....and go from there.
Also wouldnt hurt to check diff fluid level.....that could make nasty noise if low or empty.
Theres just a ton of things it COULD be, and youre gonna have to start checking and ruling things out from here.
Oh yeah almost forgot, if it is the brakes, for some reason the pads like to make dents in the knuckles, where they slide.....the pads can get stuck in these dents, and therefore can stay rubbed against the rotor also.
