This heat sucks. So after I get my harmonic balancer replaced, I'm looking to get my a/c "fixed". I still have the old r-12, and appariently I need to retrofit it to use r-134a. I found a kit at Autozone that is supposed to have everything you need for a retrofitting (adapters, plugs, couple cans of freon). Has anyone had this done at a shop? Im asking cuz I would like an estimate of how much it cost. Also, I read somewhere that if you convert from r-12 to r-134a, its good to replace the a/c drier? What is this, what does it really do, and is it hard to replace? Thanks everyone.

 

your dryer is held in by 1 nut and 2 a/c lines, You would have to drain your compressor and put new pag oil in it. (its as easy as changing your motor oil) get new o rings and the adapters for your service ports to be able to fit the 134 fitings on. its really not hard just time comsuming.

 

dont even bother just get those cans of freon at the store and the do it ur self install kit. those cans are all propane propelled it works just as good althow explosive. its cheap and easy.

 

I put in a 134 compressor in my '91. Only the front 2 bolts line up but all the AC stuff is removed casue Im in the process of fabing up on board air. I have run the 134 compressor for almost 2 years and have no problems with it being bolted in with only the front 2 bolts. I did use red lock-tight though.

 

On my 1989 I just put 2oz of PAG oil in the compressor and 2oz in the condensor. And just added 2 cans of R134. Used my own guages to fill it up. Didn't have to retrofit anything.

 

thats what im sayin!1 im just gona rip it all out. all it does is heat my engine up just open the windows and drive faster!!!!!
