Jeep 4.0 starter bolts
I am starting a "how to install the starter on the 4.0" thread. I struggled with this recently and wanted to post what I found. These 2 bolts that hold the starter on are different lengths and sizes. The 1 3/4" bolt is a 3/8x16. The 1 1/4" bolt is 10mmx1.5. Here is a picture of them.
The 10mm bolt is a little bit larger in diameter and will stretch the threads in the wrong hole. Here is a picture showing how the bolts go on the starter.
The short bolt threads into the starter and the long bolt threads into the bell housing. I could not get the long bolt to go all the way in. It was getting really tight. I measured the depth of the hole and there was plenty enough for this to go. I took a 3/8x16 bottom tap and cleaned the threads. After doing this it bolted right up good and tight. Hopefully someone will find this information useful!
