Valves n lifters tick if something's wrong. Rods n pistons knock when something's wrong. Audio quality was bad for me so ill check it out on PC tonight for ya.

on a pc, but still can't tell. get a long screwdriver listen to the engine - put your ear on the handle and move the point around until you find it. at least you should be able to identify which cylinder is causing the noise and whether its high or low in the engine. valve and lifter play would be pretty loud, rod would not.

Lemme guess, close to 200k. I have people ask me if I've got a diesel in my '97, LOL.
It's certainly valvetrain, and there could be a few things that I've pondered with mine.
If she got some miles you mite have a bad lifter, worn cam, worn rockers.
Still has good power what I heard in vid, thats a plus.
Mines been knockin for a while, my advice, its a 4 litre, run it. Not hard, but I've been running that 97 like that for a while. Up until a month ago, sometimes 600 miles a week......

It's the lifters if it goes away after the engine heats up. My '92 does the same thing, gets worse the colder the engine is. This is actualy a very common thing in the AMC 292, which i think is what you have.
My engine's been doing it ever since i got it about 3 years ago, and the noise is more constant on mine.

Video i made of my engine's knock, it's very faint because the block is hot from sitting in the sun on this wonderful (/endsarcusaum) 105 degree day i'm having.

Also: With it running, pull the spark plug connectors one at a time. If the sound quiets you've likely found the problem cylinder.
Don't forget to check if the torque converter bolts are tight and flexplate is in good shape.

Ill check the flexplate for cracks and see if it needs tightened I did the plug check awhile back and didn't notice a difference put when I pull the injector plugs on the rear 2 it seemed to get louder?...

Ill watch the video when I get off work too compare. But my noise I can still hear up to about 2000 rpm at times and sometimes nothing like I went trail riding the other day slow 15 mph pace max and when I got home I got out to check for noises and the jeep was perfectly quiet crazy JeeP!...... it looks like when the harmonic balancer is spinning it wobbles but when jeeps off I can't move it. And I was told when power steerings going bad it can knock, cause mine makes a very very faint noise when turning slow.

Yeah it may be an oil issue. I just realized i didn't record my oil gauge, but anyways it averages at the middle of its range while I'm idling. And bumps up a little when it's revving.
