J/Y Trailer Hitch Worth It???
Today I looked at every JY within 20 miles of my house (5) and found one hitch for $50. It was off of a 92, it will fit my 2000 right? I'm pretty sure it will but never hurts to ask.
The hitch was completely rusted out, I'm talking A LOT of rust. But I could use the grinder in my shop class to get rid of it and either re-paint it or bedline it. Is it worth the $50 bucks? I thought it was a little high, what do you all think?

Depends on what you mean by completely rusted out...If it's just simple surface rust then yeah snag it and remove the surface rust then treat it and bedline it and install it.. I would get the bolts but honestly would likely be better off with new mounting hardware.

Just for anyone else out there looking...the best deal I can find on a new one is at JCWhitney. They are selling a Curt brand class III hitch for $125, free shipping, and includes a free 2" drop ball mount.

Just a word of caution most of those are made for a vehicle with a frame and you need the nutstrips from your dealer to mount them up. The regular bolts fished up into the hollow unibody is not very strong and I certainly would not trust that set of bolts as a recovery point.

Great advice! I wouldn't have known. muddeprived, do you happen to recall how much the nutstrips cost you at the dealer?

They are not too cheap IIRC $27 each but they are heavyduty and also are used with an aftermarket gas tank skid too. Mudd may have found them cheaper too.

Yes these can only be had at a dealer or junkyard. Junkyard might be hard because most of the cherokees don't come with a bracket in the driver's side framerail so finding one will be some hunt.
Here's a thread on it, pictures at the very bottom of last page.

They are called skid plate reinforcement plates.
Part numbers 52001174 (right) and 52001175 (left)
Blue was right, they are roughly $27 each. It requires removing your rear bumper but that's only 8 bolts. Easy.

You can also make one - I just toook some steel and drilled a few holes and tack'd on a few nuts - I didn't know about this until I bought my hitch and was installing it the night before i had to toe something....

See if there is a pull-a-parts or a pick-in-pull in your area, I got mine out there for 12 bucks. In excellent condition with hardware. I would not buy a rusted out piece of metal. I'd try to find a different one.
