Did you put teflon tape on the threads? If so you will lose the electrical ground it needs to work.

I know that once I disconnected my electrical sending unit from my oil pressure gauge it will max out once I turn on the key. So you may have a bad connection in your wires if the sensor works on resistance, it will go max reading instead of low reading.
