Installing sideplates for XJ Classic
I have a 1996 XJ Classic and purchased some sideplate trail armor for the rocker panels. The plates are made from aluminum. Does anyvody have any advice as far as installing these things? I am not going to use rivets to install because the rocker panels are starting to rust out. I've heard of using double sided tape coupled with a butyl type of caulk to help prevent anything from getting in between plates and body. I know that there are adhesives similar to glue also. keep in mind too that the classic model XJ has factory trim on it already so tips on removing that adhesive would great. The passenger side rocker panel has a rusted out spot approximately 6 inches long. Should I cover that spot or will it be okay to leave as is. I think an attempt to prevent the rust in this case might be a lost one. Any input is much appreciated.
