Default Installing New Seats, Need Advice

Hello everyone. I've been recently working on fixing up my first jeep. 96 Cherokee Sport. I spent yesterday at the junk yard acquiring some parts and then installing a new gas tank, which was a pain. Anyway while browsing the yard I came across a newer cherokee that had seats that looked brand freaking new. I wasn't able to get them pulled because they were only open until noon so I'll have to pick them up tomorrow afternoon. I was just going to get seat covers but the nice ones are around $100/seat. I was able to pick up all four seats for $200.00. I thought it was a heck of a deal! Now I've noticed on my jeep that the front seats have some rust on the bolts and brackets which makes me worry that I'm going to snap a bolt heat right off. I've already treated the bolts with some lubricant that penetrates. It's not PB but something that I understand the AF uses while working on stuff. It's supposed to be very good. Anyway I was hoping for any other advice about getting the seats out. I'm definitely going to treat the bolts again tonight with more lubricant. Any other advice would be great. Thanks. Also, while at the junk yard I picked up a rear wiper arm that I needed and a console arm rest that I needed to replace and found an exact matching color.

All is taken care of now. I see I didn't get any replies oh well. Seats are already out. Broke three bolt heads off. Got them taken care of though. I found some bad rusted out spots on the floor board. I don't have the option of fixing that now. It will have to do until later on. I'll just pull the seats later which won't be an issue since I'm using new hardware and I'll get the floor patched then recarpet or herculine it. Now ready to go and pick up new seats and get them installed!

glad you got them out with little issue. broken bolts suck but its better then bolt breaking while driving or something.

I'm always looking for seats in good condition when I go to the JY but no luck, evidently Cherokee owners are filthy slobs because all the seats look like they've been to hell and back.

It makes you wonder doesn't it. Do people actually take care of their vehicles anymore. I don't think so. I was very lucky to find the seats from the JY. Night and day difference. The new ones are installed now and look awesome. My old ones weren't terrible but they weren't great. Next project will be replacing the headliner fabric. I was able to view a write up that another member did saying what to do. That'll be down the road. Right now main concern is getting it road worthy. Dropped it off at my trusty mechanic shop to get fixed while I'm off doing other things that need my attention.

I forgot to mention that the cherokee I took the seats from was brought in on a cash for clunker deal. IT IS AN ABSOLUTE SHAME TOO! Body wise it was in better shape than mine is! WHY?

Headliner is a piece of cake, but I found it's nice to have 2 friends to help with it. If you follow most write ups you will be suprised at how easy it is. Takes way longer to remove/instal than prepping and doing the job.

Herculiner would be a perfect choice for your next project...

BTW, I'd avoid WLS Headliners. They ship in a small box and FOLD the headliner to fit...it comes out creased so heavily that it took me an hour with a steamer to flatten. I used a clothes steamer my wife has and it worked "OK"...not great. It was a PITA and unnecessary - they should have shipped the material rolled and in a 60" long box.

And the instructions say use the steamer function on a clothes iron. Trust me on this...you'll be there ALL DAY with an iron and if you touch that headliner you'll melt it. No joke - I think these WLS people are trying to get you to destroy the fabric with that "tip".

Secondly, I'd make sure you have two cans of 3M #76 glue on hand. I did my headliner last night and just barely had enough to finish with one can. No way can I do the overhead console.

Find a better supplier than WLS, have two extra people to hold the fabric up in the air while you press it into place so it doesn't stick to itself, and don't freak out...it's not that bad...but don't expect it to look like your 2008 model year car, either.

Also, leave an inch minimum overhand at the front and glue the material around the front edge - there is no trim piece up there to cover the raw edge.

Thanks for the heads up on the headliner info guys. I don't know what I want to do yet. Refab my current liner or just get one in good condition out of the cherokee I've been picking off of like a vulture. I think I'll just Refab it because I have to Refab the console on roof as well and that console is missing. It will give me something to do. And yes I will definitely be patching the floor in the next two months or so and herculining it. I can't do it now cause it's my only vehicle and I'm on a need vehicle in running shape now deal.

When I did the headliner in my '97 I went to a local trim shop, cut a piece of my old headliner out, and we started matching the gray up, you wouldn't believe how many different shades of gray there is, we got one so close the sun shades almost match, I paid $35 for the material and he rolled it nice and loose. I used 2 cans on my headliner alone spraying front to back and then left to right. Also when you get ready to trim the back and sides make sure you have extra blades for your utility knife, that crap will dull a razor fast.
