Default Installing an inline heater hose cutoff valve

I just did the heater hose valve deletion by installing '97 hoses, which don't allow for an inline switch into my '96 XJ, and now when I'm on the road wind blows through my now constantly hot heater core and into the cabin. How can I stop this?

First idea is to find some kind of inline valve that I can install and just manually open and close according to when I need heat.

Second idea is to block the floor vents, which is where it mostly comes out.

Does anyone even make a manual valve that's suitable to put in my heater hose?

Thanks.

the coolant will still heat up though. Maybe not as fast.

As far as I know, all xj cold/ hot air controls are the same..thats why they removed the water shut off control valve. There should be a door somewhere inside your junk under the glovebox that opens and closes to divert the hot air from the cabin when not calling for heat. I think that specific one is called the blend door. The seals may be worn on it which is difficult to change or the external actuator may just be bad or stuck. Like everything else under there, its vacuum controlled. I don't currently have a picture of which one is the correct actuator but I think its fairly easy to access and see if it moves freely and normally. If so then your blend door seals are bad , and it looks like a job for next spring since it will be colder soon and you will be needing the heat anyway..

Yes, I believe this is the correct answer. Thanks MY!

bluejeep2001 Thanks for the explanation. That's sort of along the lines I was thinking...bad air blend door seal. I'll start rooting around under the glove compartment and see what turns up.

The shut off valve looks like a good idea. My blender door leaks a bit too. Don't have ac so it blows warm on cold on a hot summer day, but the air its sucking in is warm anyway. Also I leave for work at 430am and even in the summer my windows are fogged that early, i need the heat to clear the windows and it would be a pita to open the hood to throw valve twice a day. Does yours blow warm on top of the ac

I just had the HVAC box out of my XJ. The blend door has a rubber seal around it, so no foam to fall apart. Mine was in perfect shape.

But its not a 100% seal around the door. The blend door is at the exit side of the cold and hot air passages, and because the air coming into the HVAC box is directed at both the cold and hot air passages all the time, there is always going to be some leakage from the hot air side.

The air coming from the floor vents is fairly slow but it's enough to be really annoying, especially when I'm avoiding running the ac in high 80s temps to keep the engine cooler. I haven't run the AC in a bit so I'm not sure if the slow leak of hot air will be a problem. Hadn't seen this as a potential issue but I guess we'll see.

I prefer to use one of these dual inlet and outlet style of valves. Using a regular style of ball valve cuts off the heater core, yes, but that's also serving the function of a coolant bypass, and it's where the coolant temp sensor is located. During warm up, there won't be any coolant flow and your engine will heat up less evenly. Not the end of the world and I'm sure there's plenty of XJs running around like that with no issue, but I figured I'd point it out.

This X style of brass valve is pretty cheap on Amazon.

Thanks yes after someone pointed out the bypass issue I decided to go with this X style valve vs a regular cut off. Thanks for sending this pic of your mount location. This is much better than putting it where the previous valve was, which is what I had been picturing.

Did you purchase the 3/4" barb valve and shove the 5/8" hose over it?

On Amazon...
Amazon Amazon

Haven't installed it yet but it looks like I got the 3/4". If the hose doesn't fit I'm just gonna have to Frankenstein something, but I'm hoping if I heat the hose in boiling water it'll stretch over the barb.

With amazon you can return it for free and get the 5/8 if necessary.
