I got an electric fan that mounts beside the stock belt driven one on my 96 XJ Sport.
For a while now I have had it in and just wired to the battery and a switch. But I've been trying to find out how to hook it up to the stock system so that it will automatically turn on if the temp is too high or the a/c pressure is too much.
I haven't been able to find where the relay for it would be or the wiring harness or anything. I have read around on a bunch of the threads and have a general idea of how the wiring works, but can't find any of the pieces when I look under my hood. I found diagrams, pictures, pdfs, and seen on cars at the junk yard that the relay mounts on the driverside inner fender just next to the airbox. But all of these are earlier models than my 96. And my 96 has a large box with a few bundles of wires going into a computer there rather than the open area with a relay. (See picture).
If anyone could help me locate the parts I would appreciate it!
I have looked for similar year XJs in my local junk yards to try and follow the wiring but there have not been any 90's cherokees. Just late 80's

Mine has a small plug (About the width of my thumb) on the top right side of the fan and runs down under the fixtures that you have pictured. Maybe the other half of the plug is tucked down there??

I have taken out the air box and other things around it to look for that connecter that would plug into the one the fan had on it, but my jeep did not originally have the fan. So I'm not sure if it has the relay and wiring or not. Though like I said none of the local junk yards have a similar year jeep to go look at.

confused about youre statement that it didnt originally have the fan.
it did originally have an elec fan.
the pic u posted is the pcm?ecm? u need to look in the pdc?, power distribution center on the other side of the engine bay where all the relays and fuses are

Stock on mine was only the mechanical fan. In the pdc I can't figure out which relay should be the fan one. None of them are labeled on the cover or spots. And it doesn't show in my Haynes manual

are you sure about not having an elec fan, i cant imagine how the engine driven fan could possibly be expected to cool that rad by itself, do you not have a/c? something sounds fishy

If someone could put up a picture showing which location the relay is in for the fan within the PDC that would be great! Thanks

everything i can find confirms all 4.0s had the elec fan
i am amazed you could run w/o one givin how hot our trucks run just freakin amazing

I can confirm that the Auxiliary fan was NOT on all 4.0 liters. Mine is a 1993 Sport 6 cylinder with no air conditioning, and never had it.
From what I have read, the aux fan was typically added to Cherokees that had A/C and the trailer tow package installed ( A/C adds in an extra radiator, and trailer package added in a 3rd one to cool automatic transmissions for towing).
From what Ive seen on mine, it is feasible to install it. My relay & outer fuse box has the slots for aux fan, and the slots near radiator + holes for fastening screws are present, looks mostly like the wires need to be run, and the fuse & Relay put in (not sure if PCM input of temp to the aux fan relay wire is run).
the 1996 is still before the changeover at 1997. You might check the passenger side fender well for the Power Distribution box. Inside the cover, there are relays and a few fuses. The cover has a diagram for the fuses and relays. I'll try to post a picture later tonight when I get home.
