Installed cruise control, doesn't work
98 XJ 4x4 4.0 AW4, FACTORY SUNROOF Woohoo!
Wanted cruise on the XJ, so I gathered all the parts from the salvage. Servo with cable and bracket, steering wheel with switches (in better shape than mine), and clockspring. $75 for all. I thought it was a fair deal.
I've had the parts for over a year, and decided to install them today. Install went smooth, about an hour overall. I made sure to recenter the clockspring. The clockspring appears to be the correct one, as it has the wire for the cruise. After the install, operation didn't go so smooth. When the 'on' switch for the cruise is pressed, I don't get an indicator light in the dash, and the cruise will not work.
I pulled the wiring connector from the servo and cleaned it and the servo with contact cleaner. The vehicle plug had been open with no cap or cover, and was slightly dirty. Cleaning it made no difference.
I remember reading on one of the forums that the steering wheel switches are year specific, due to a slight variation of the resistance. I specifically asked for switches from a 98, but don't know if that is what I actually got.
Is there a separate fuse or relay for the cruise system that may not have been installed since my XJ did not have factory cruise?
Should one pin of the connector from the airbag to the cruise switches have voltage with the ignition in the on position?
Should there be a 'cruise on' lamp installed in the instrument cluster?
Any help?
