inside spare tire mount
I want to mount my spare inside for a few reasons;
1) Im too damn lazt to lift it up on a swing out rear bumper
2) Im too damn lazy to hoist it onto the roof
Kiding aside, the real reason is I don't want that much weight on the roof raising my center of gravity and I don't want that much weight way out over the rear axle contributing to understeer on wet roads.
I remember seeing a commercial rack that bolted down in the rear cargo area and was elevated about 6 inches so you could slide stuff under the rack. Then the spare bolted ontot eh top of the rack.
Does anyone now where I can find such a rack or do you have any other cool ideas for securing the spare in the luggage area.
Additional Details;
99 XJ, 31X10.5" spare

If you don't mind my asking, why don't you use the factory spare location then? I think you can fit up to a 31 or 32" wheel in the stock location. Would that be too much in the way? Just curious...

The rack I remember seeing but can't find anymore looked like it attached to the four hooks in the cargo area. It raised the tire up about 6 inches and then mounted the tire horizantlly. It seems nice since it allowed a little storage underneath but didn't take alot of extra room and the tire was below the vision of the rear view mirror and hopefullt would be block by the front seats if it were to come loose and go flying forward.

My 31/10.50 is in the stock location, I just removed the metal bracket the stocker sat on and lengthened the hardware using a piece of allthread and a threaded sleeve to make it work as it was too short. It barely fitts fully inflated and touches the sound bar but it fits.
