Default injector and intake gasket question

so just put a new intake/exhaust manifold gasket and I'm pretty sure its leaking. sounds like a vacuum leak, easy enough, but why is it smoking!? lol
im assuming its just dirt and sludge burning away that may have fell on the exhaust? i haven't driven it yet but i will tomorrow after i get the piece i need from the junkyard.

also how would it act if i got the injectors mixed up? i marked everything to put it back together easily and completely forgot to mark where the injectors go. i just put 703 injectors in so I'm not sure if its running rough because of those or they're in the wrong spot.

any advice would be helpful! just spent all my time after work the last 2 weeks doing a bunch of major maintenance.

The injectors can go in any hole, the connectors need to go the right spot though. If you have the connectors crossed the engine will run kind of ratty. If you have an intake leak at the gasket, you may have an exhaust leak too, that would account for the smoke. But I did an intake swap on my 4l and did have a little smoke from my greasy paw prints burning off.

any trick to figure out which connectors go to which cylinder? the first 4 seem correct but 5 and 6 seemed the same length so ill switch them tomorrow and see what happens

also i used copper spray sealant on the intake manifold, and i feel like i shouldn't have lol. should i pick up some goopy stuff for the next one?

Try backing all the intake bolts off a hair and retightening them in the correct order. Then double check the injector plug order.

good news and bad news

good news i let it warm up and it stays well below the 210 mark, so the new water pump works hah

bad news redo the bolts helped the exhaust leak a little but i can still hear the vacuum sound from the intake manifold.

Use the starting fluids/carb cleaner test to pinpoint it better sound travels even though you hear it from the back more could be further away.

HA! FINALLY! a chance to post this. (I came up with it myself)

Golf Anyone?

LITTLE BALL, LONG GREEN, TEE YOUR WHITE BALL...................................

Light Blue, Light Green, , Tan, Yellow, White, then Black are the injector wire color codes.

Once you know the pair in the middle is right, you only need to check one on each end.

That sounds like one mean, steady vacuum leak/ hiss. Sounds are funny with a microphone...I'd start with a hose to listen for where it is, and/or use short little shots of something that burns well, hair spray or carb cleaner or paint...OK, I prefer cheap starting fluid. When you hit it the sound will change. Or it's just the TB?.

I found it's really easy to confuse a lower O ring with the intake manifold gasket.

I had some issues with the 703 conversion. Since my O2 sensor was shot, and they work at a higher flow, it REALLY sucked gas. So much it seems that it would only get to temp. (and open the T-stat) if I was climbing a good hill.

Right away with the O2 functioning, the heat came on! ANOTHER (and this is new on the forum I think) ANOTHER issue with the 703's. While you are in "open loop" before you heat up, the default pulse width is for the 18.6 lbs/hr injectors! That whole time we are running rich.

I guess we are OK, cruising at temp, but we are paying driving around under 160* or so.

I did a somewhat choppy job dealing with the issue here in this link, then rrich came along......He misunderstood. The Renix 02 sensor it's self grounds the sensor wire from the ECU...anyway, also there is a link to more 02 issues>>https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/ren...ce-rms-133153/

You sure you don't have a vacuum plug off of one of the nipples and the side of the manifold?

i don't think theres any nipples on the side of the intake. just a bunch on top and the egr on the back. another thing i just used half a tank driving about 40 miles today. would a intake manifold leak do that? or am i putting my other injectors back in? lol

Did'ja have a really fun time fitting the injectors in? I botched it once and found you could end up with an O ring all wrong. And YES. The MAP uses the vacuum to decide how much fuel to dump. Lower vacuum means you have your foot in it. (it tells your ECU to increase pulse duration)(or maybe something like that!), When vacuum is low.

Can you find a 3 foot piece of hose, put one end near your ear, and hear with the other where the hiss is coming from?

Or if you spray it with a little burst, the sound of the engine will change.

The 703's are OK, you most likely just have..some other little issue.

Pardon me, I don't mean to sound like i'm yelling!
