Default indicator issues

hello all,

I have a minor electrical mal-funtction when I engage my left turn signal it blinks intermitnataly, until I press the brake at which point the indicator stops blinking, and both (right and left exterior indicator (the orange ones)) come on solid (not blinking). What causes this? is it a bad indicator switch, or is it at the light or in the brake... I feel a little lost as to where this might originate.
xj, 98' 4.0 6in line classic

thanks!

it sounds like a bad earth to me. have you checked all the bulbs and cleaned the bulb holders for any crud and gunk? I had a strange one that turned out to be a flaky bulb in one of the side lights. Good luck and let us know if you find out any more.

You probably have some frayed wires touching somewhere, so when you apply the breaks the turn signal gets a steady signal from the break light.

I had this issue on my 96 XJ. It was a wire harness under the air filter box. Remove air box and pull harness apart, then spray electrical cleaner in it , then put some dielectric grease in it. It worked for me.

Sorry all it has taken me so long to get back to this post...

I tried cleaning the connector next to the air intake box and put a bunch of dielectric grease in it and still the problem persists... Any more ideas of where the problem might persist. I did check the fuses and no luck there either.

thank you again for all the help

Try replacing bulbs and cleaning sockets sometimes a bulb will short out and not blow a fuse. If you have trailer connections check wiring, will short over to brake lights cause same problem.

Did you do anywork under the dash?? A few weeks ago I installed an alarm and some where along the way I disconnected a thin black conneector(partially disconected) that runs up the steering column. The problem was no brake lights and the right turn signal didn't blink, just stayed on.
Another thing to look for is if you have trailer light wiring. The end could be corroded or the trailer light converter could be malfunctioning. Your Jeep has sererate light for brake and turn signals. the converter combines the two so you can use it on the trailer(the trailer light will be both turn and stop)
