Hey Cherokee Fans

I have been having a hell of a time with my Jeep lately. I own a 1999 Cherokee Classic, 4x4 Automatic

I have been hearing this creaking sound in the front end, which appears to be on the passenger side of my Jeep. I can go down the highway/freeway at around 120km/h which is about 75 kph and I get this creaking sound. It sounds almost like a tin can being squashed or rocks thrown at it.

I also get it when I slow down to a stop, I'm on my brakes and it intensifies and gets louder, but when I fully stop, and then take off again I don't get it right away.

I got new rotors, pads, and U-Joints just under a year ago, and just took my Jeep into the shop yesterday so see if my brakes were acting up. Everything was fine. The mechanic told me I might need new calipers as the left one was kind of hanging up.

I need help. I need to figure out what the sound is and I have searched high and low and cannot see anything obvious.

Its a creaking sound, along with the sound of a pop can having rocks thrown at it, It happens driving around 120km/h or 75kp/h when NOT on the brakes, and then when I apply the brakes it intensifies and gets louder

i have the exact same jeep as you, 1999 classic and mine does the same thing, sounds like there is rattling rocks in a can when slowing down and stopping

 

Yes exactly! I'm glad I'm not the only one, even though I don't wish this on any Cherokee owner.

You get the sound at high speeds also?

 

yeah, mine makes alot of sounds though haha

 

Mine makes lots of noise at high speeds, and then when braking to slow down. It sounds soo bad.

I wish I had an answer I wish someone had one haha

With the "rocks inside a can" description I`m thinking something inside the front shaft housing since that is basically a long hollow steel tube?..Maybe the shift motor since that`s up under the right passenger side.. Hub/bearings?

 

I was thinking hubs/bearing but I dont want to go spend all that cash to NOT solve my problem

Would have a brand new set of Hubs and bearings tho

 

does it sound like a grinding almost? my 97 does the same thing and I'm actually about to try replacing the wheel bearings out of the next paycheck hoping it remedies the problem. I took the wheel off once and thought it was the dust guard behind the rotor rubbing from the rust, but now the other side is doing it too.

 

It sounds like rocks in can mostly, probably a bit of grinding also.

I think Im just gonna go buy a new set of hubs and stick em in.

Unless anyone else has the exact solution to my problem

 

check the stabilizer arms and linkage and make sure all of the grease bags, the rubber is ok and not weathered and cracked. maybe there isnt grease in something. Mine was creaking all over and i changed the axel joints and that was the problem.

 

i did that a month ago and it still does it so its not that, im thinkin it might be the axle joint like dougf12 said

 

Well the wheel bearings are in the hubs arent there?
If not, I might just replace the bearings.. I replaced my U-Joints already so I KNOW those are good.

 

yeah, the wheel bearings are in the hub... 94 bucks a piece at advance auto.

 

mobilecherokee4, yur saying you replaced the wheel bearings and hubs and that didnt change any thing for you? The noise was still there?

I have recently replaced my U-Joints, so I know those are good like I said earlier.
