Hey everyone, I'm new here. I just bought a 98 XJ sport last weekend and I need some help with it. The guy I bought it from said it had been sitting for a while, so as you might expect, it had some issues.
It used to stall sometimes and sputter some raw fuel out of the exhaust
. I took it to a shop and they said the 4th and 6th fuel injectors were bad. So I swapped those out and everything seemed to be running fine.
I drove it Friday night and everything was going good until it randomly died going down the road. The RPM's just dropped to idle and I couldn't get them up. Then it just slowed to a stop on the side of the road. I haven't been able to get it running since. When I try to start it, it will crank up, run for about half a second and then die. PLEASE HELP
I think it may be something to do with the ignition since it has been sitting for a while and when it did run, it was running way rich. I'm not really sure since I'm kind of new to this whole thing. (I'm 16 and this is my first XJ)

mine did the same exact thing.... it was the ballist resistor, since yours has sat for so long the conections are most likley bad. there cheap. to test it just connect the two wires going to it and try and start it/ its the ceramic thing by your airbox on the inside of your fender. the wires are orange and black

thanks for posting the pic he would have never found it with my directions. im guessing it starts with good pressure then the pressure drops, and it dies. i always put out the idea of the ballist resistor becouse its cheap. i dont want anyone doing what i did... new fuel pump, fuel filter, and fpr. i spent like 200 dollars befor i put the two wires togeth and it ran... free fix

Thanks for the help everybody. I did a fuel pressure test, and there was zero fuel pressure. I even took off the fuel feed line and nothing was getting to the fuel rail, but I can hear the pump start working when I turn the ignition on. I also checked the lines and there are no leaks so I'm pretty sure the fuel pump is bad.
I also looked for those wires you mentioned by the air box, and I don't seem to have anything like that. My Jeep has what looks like a computer there. Its a box like thing with 3 large connectors in it.
Thanks once again, I'm off to go buy a new fuel pump. Goodbye $200

So after working all day on trying to figure out the problem and spending $250 dollars, I learned the hard way that the fuel gauge in jeep does not work properly. FAIL

when you change your fuel see if you can blow threw the fuel pressure regulater/filter. sounds like the same thing my old '98 was doing. If you need a regulator/filter check ebay. I got one for 40 bucks. the dealer wants 120 but thats par for the course.

OUCHIE!!!
Well it wasn't an EPIC fail, but you did mention it ONLINE so...
It just became an EPIC fail.

Just kidding.
I know how it feels, got stuck on a major highway once with a previous car.. Guage said 1/4 tank. Motor said guage was full of ****.
Walked about 15mi that day (90*+)
Since then, I never let my guage get lower than 1/4 tank, unless I am doing some MPG testing.
