Default ignition switch

I think I have traced my no crank issue to the ignition switch. The dealer wants $127.00 for a new switch. Is there any alternitives, after market switch, repair kit, etc. When I turn the key everything comes on but it will not turn starter. Starts fine with screw driver across starter, nss has been cleaned. 1999 Cherokee, auto, 4.0 eng. Does the air bag have to be removed to replace the switch, and is this something one can do at home? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Are you referring to the electronic switch or the Lock cylinder?

I'd test voltage to and after the NSS before you go swapping out the switch.

Here's how to change it:

1 Turn the key to the ON position.

2 Remove the lower steering column trim piece, by removing all of the screws holding in the piece.

3 Disconnect the two electrical connections from the back of the ignition switch.

4 Unscrew the Torx screw on the ignition switch.

5 Depress the locking tab on the ignition switch and remove the switch from the steering column.

6 Place the new switch into the steering column. The tab will lock into place when you push the switch into the column.

7 Replace the Torx screw holding the switch in the column.

8 Reconnect the two electrical connections to the ignition switch.

Could I bypass the ignition switch and install a push button? How hard would that be?
