...where would you take it from?
I ask because I've got an LPG conversion on my 97 4.0 XJ which means I'm running an extra computer. The guys who installed it hooked it up to the front of the Power Distribution box (under the little clip on cover) which looks to be where the alt feeds in. It worked fine until I had the aircon re-gassed and now the LPG dies whenever the aircon compressor kicks in.

Is it a bad idea to take the power from that location or do I have a deeper problem with charging/regulation? The alt is a recent reconditioned unit and the gauge on the dash behaves itself.

Straight from the battery? Use a fuse.

You have a deeper problem. The A/C may be over charged or the compressor might be seized.

I might pull out my meter and look for resistance between alt+, there, and battery+. I'm not sure if the alt+ goes through a fusable link between it and the bat, maybe. Regardless of the draw, the voltage dipping sounds like a bad connection or wire.

Resistance in a bad wire or connection will make it warm up/get hot. You should be able to get any good .....down to around an ohm or less.
