idea for engine swap for cherokee
Hi. I am going to own a 93 cherokee in two weeks. The engine is shot and the body is bad. I want to swap in a dodge diesel engine. Would i have to change anything like the tranny or wiring harness? Anyone have any links to a site that talks about this topic? Oh, any sites that sell dodge diesel's in cali? Needs to be from a pickup.

the 4BT is a really good swap. any bigger cummins style motor simply wont fit in there. and no, theres no "kit," so youll be making everything work yourself. but its not impossible, and its been done. search on pirate4x4 for ideas and such

There is another MUCH better site out there with a ton of info about swapping the 4BT into Jeeps. I can't remember the name off-hand, but they have a couple of complete swaps on there.
Google 4BT and Jeep... it should come up.

I agree, this isn't just a order parts and bolt it together swap. I am sure its possible but you have to be ready to fab mounts, plates, and rewire a whole vehicle to do this. I don't know what you skill level is but if you can and have the facilities to do this it would be an interesting write up!!! Good luck

i agree that it is going to be a pain but for these guys to say it is over your head is another thing. More than half the guys on this site prob didnt know how to put a lift kit on their jeep until they did it. Im just saying you learn by doing things not by giving up before you get started. GOOD LUCK

well i can make the harness easy. i just wanted to buy one instead. and i also just wanted to buy the parts and everything instead of fab-ing them. that i can do as well. i have a 110 volt welder but im not sure if its suitable for engine mounts, etc.

just to be clear, this isnt something you can buy from jeepinoutfitters and do over a weekend. like stated above, you need to do everything yourself. heres a basic list:
fab new motor mounts
wire the ENTIRE motor and get it to work correctly, i wouldnt even bother with the stock gauges
address cooling
find a suitable tranny that bolts to the 4BT
adapt that tranny to a jeep tcase, or use a different tcase, possibly a new crossmember
make mounts for both of those
new driveshaft
exhaust routing
it can be done, and has been done. my friend is planning on doing this swap to his MJ come spring, but to say hes built a few custom parts would be VERY modest. if you're serious about this, go search on www.pirate4x4.com

thanks, XJ. i needed some help to get this thing started. ive got the engine but no tranny. when i get the jeep im gonna yank the trans out and see if it bolts up, otherwise i'll just get an adapter plate fab'ed at my brothers shop. im also going to put off fab-ing the M.M. for now and buy a set of them for the dodge motor and see if i cant modifly them to fit. im no good at making motor mounts, belive me i tried. for my dads cherokee. one of them broke and he said he'll give me $70 IF i could make him a new mount. didnt work.
