a good degreaser, and a power washer.. I think that is the best way, you can also go in with a brush to try and loose some stuff up but its easyer with the power washer..

since you have an 01 you dont have to worry about dist caps getting flooded or plug wires arching. I just used some degreaser and a pressure washer, make sure the Jeep is running while your spraying.

I did the same thing on my tj when it was running. The degreaser would dry so fast and stain all the plastic crap in there uz it was hot. They looked like poo afterwards and i had to scrub them down to make em look decent. After a while i just left the mud on it

Before that i would use soapy water and spray it all over the engine a couple times, giving it a good 30 min or so to soak and then hose it off with a light pressure washer. Came out great.....then i got it all muddy again

Go to the Dollar tree buy Awesome Orange spray it down then spray it with the hose it will work fine and should not be any problem.

This should be done with the motor cold of course.

brake clean is like pressure washer in a can. or if you can find it we used to have some stuff called cherry bomb degreaser it worked wonders but you really want to be careful what you get it on.

Gunk engine brite degreaser and a hose work great engine warm but not hot. Don't spray the exhaust or you may crack the header.

I have used either foamy engine bright...does an ok job.

Or Dawn Dish Washing soap. Skip the slogan of it takes grease outta your way. Dump bottle on motor in areas...Use a 1-1.5ft scrub brush with a bucket of water to get the suds started.

Then I pressure wash it. Either quarter car wash or my washer at home. Pretty much takes all the junk off the motor.

I've had good luck with Scrubbing Bubbles and a garden hose. That's what we use at the shop. :-)
