I should add the gas is flowing very slowly into the tank after it puddles on the outside

make sure its opening that little flap I havent seen a gas that will, if not go buy a funnel to pop that open and pour your gas correctly, OR just pour the gas in SLOWLY

OR you can try this if youre coordinated enough, with one hand use a pen or long rod to open the flap then with other hand pour away!!

Do the cans have nozzles on them to push the flap open in the fill hole?

I use a funnel cause the newer gas can nozzles won't fit into the filler hole.

+1 I've got a funnel with a screen and a bendy tube on it, works great as I can close the door on the flexible part and pour away... Nice because 20L gas is freakin heavy and I'm a wimp so need both arms lol

However in a pinch I'd use a screwdriver.

Take a screwdriver and push in the little flap and see where it goes, on mine it would go to the side blocking the vent tube. A restriction in the vent tube will not let gas get into the tank so it'll come right back out. If it moves in different directions, the flap is worn and should be removed or replaced.

Screwdriver or funnel. try to keep it 1/2 tank full. the gas cools the fuel pump in the tank.

Is this guy serious? If yes then I'd suggest to just sell the xj and get a bicycle.

There's this little gauge thing with a E on the left side and a F on the right side. You want to make sure to keep the needle above the E and it will solve your problem.

A transmission funnel works great, but looking at the gas gauge on the dash every now and then works even better.
