Default I need your EXPERT adive guys....

Hey guys,

I am looking to get into a 04 Grand cherokee limited. The old XJ isnt handling my new 21ft boat to well on the towing aspect, i just need more HP and bigger SUV and I really want to stay with jeeps... Does the 4.7 handle higher miles like the I6?? Thats my only concern. I can get this one for $4500.00, has 175k miles on it... I went to see it and it was pretty much Mint/New condition. Everything looked amazing.

http://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/ctd/2746058175.html

Just scared of the high miles... any help would be great!!!

The only issue I ever had from my GC was the transmission sensors.

Primarily the vehicle speed sensors.

Tho, It was a 02.

Like any vehicle, previous owner(s) maintenance or lack there of play a big part. I have heard the 4.7s have known head gasket issues.

Maybe posting in the grand Cherokee section would have been a better option

For a 21 ft. boat, I think you need something bigger than a Grand. It might be rated to tow it weight-wise in a straight pull, but the tail is going to end up wagging the dog. Also, that would be a heck of a strain on an engine that is closing in on 200K.

You need to be looking at something like a full-size SUV or truck.

Then keep your XJ.

My mistake by putting it in this forum... just thought you guys would still have some thought on this. I would totally do a pickup but its also a family car too. Need the 4 seats. The Grand cherokee will tow my 21ft offshore no problem, a buddy of mine has one and we gave it a try.

What's the minimum GCWR of the GC? From that number, u subtract the max towed weight of the boat/gear/fuel and also subtract the weight of the passengers and gear from the GCWR. Need to roll your boat behind your buddy's GC across certified public scales.....don't guess at or go by the boat brochures stated weight. My motorcycle will move a 10,000 lb trailered load, will it tow it?.......don't think so. Be safe with the family.....know u are under the GCWR of the GC.....don't guess at it.

Towing with a vehicle with not so large a wheel base is not a good idea in the first place although possible

agreed with dbj383's post - if the item being pulled weighs more then 80% of the weight of the vehicle doing the pulling, it's not safe. Same logic uhaul uses with their rentals
