I have an odd clunk when stopping
Occasionally, when I am slowing to a stop, I hear a clunk a second or so after I release the accelerator. It seems to be more prevalent when I initiate the stop in no gear higher than 3rd. I also occasionally hear it when I take off from a stop but again after the accelerator has been depressed... so there is a delay making me think it is not trans related
I recently replaced the trans but this issue surfaced before the trans issue (clutches).
If I come into the stop easy enough, or take off easy enough, the clunk does not happen.
U-joint? I have no idea...
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don’t have the money to go to a shop and pay someone to figure it out, and I will be doing the repair work my self. I plan on changing dif. fluid and will inspect those related gears...
Thank you

odd clunk when stopping
My 1995 Sport does exactly the same thing, I was told by couple of Jeep owners that the problem could be in the rear spring, will replace all bushings. next checking for u-joint. My front drive shaft has little play when engage on 2W, back drive shaft does not have any play. maybe this is the problem.

If it feels kinda like a bowling ball in the rear end, then it is probably your slip yoke. You can easily pull it an re-coat it with grease. When it gets dry it will stick and cause the clunk when starting or stopping. There are several writeups with detailed instructions on how to fix it. Takes less than 30 minutes.
