Why is this? I've noticed that all the Manual tranny cherokees have no tach and the automatic ones do have one. Doesn't this seem a little backwards?

Depends on the instrument cluster that was installed.... My 85 had the sport cluster and it had the tach... So does my Comanche....

/\/\/\X2 you can change out your cluster to one that doen have a tach. the only thing you need to change is the oil pressure sending unit and the temp sending unit ( if you have full gauges already you dont have to worry about it).

On your 99 cherokee you don't need to swap any sensors. Simply find yourself a full gauges cluster from 97+ and it is a direct swap. Keep in mind the mileage goes with the cluster, so try and find a cluster with mileage closest to your vehicle or have the new cluster programmed.

I did it on my Cherokee and I love having real gauges and a tach.

My 98 xj came with the idiot light cluster no tach just lights's you can swap in a gauge cluster it's a direct swap no other part's needed on the 97-01 xj's I got my cluster off ebay for $65.00.
