Default I dont know how much gas I have!

So lately I'll be getting low on gas and my fuel gauge near flatlines. Even the over head console says I only have a couple miles till empty sometimes even 0. Now I know there fuel in it. I don't know if or how the console is connected to the gauge but what could cause this? This is a 98 too by the way.

The sending unit on the fuel pump assembly may be a bit off. Not unusual. That is what feeds your gauge and console.

Consider this more of a "characteristic" of your XJ, rather than a problem. Unless you want to drop the tank and replace the fuel pump assembly......

BTW, don't run your gas tank too low. Fuel is what COOLS the fuel pump; running it really low can be hard on your fuel pump as they need to stay submerged in gasoline to stay cool.

Because of that, I don't run mine less than 1/8th of a tank before filling it.

Sounds like a sending unit if I had to take a wild guess

The float probably has a pinhole in it and is sinking.

I didn't think too much of it. It's more of an annoyance. I try to keep it filled it's just lately my schedules haven't left much time to fill up. Not gonna drop the tank anytime soon seeing as its in the 30s snowy and I don't have access to a garage

well if you get 15 mpg (thats low average for a stock xj) you can keep track of your miles driven and be pretty safe.

HA! I'd be ecstatic if I got 15. I have a 3" lift and average about 12.5 mpg. Thats something I plan on trying to fix when it warms up and I get cash.
