I could really use the HELP! Pics
Alrighty,
I Have noticed a faulty breather hose in my Currie 9 inch rear axle. The threads on the hose is stripped and no longer screws to the top of the axle. It is now leaking oil more and more. I went wheeling about a week ago when I didn't know of the problem and went in water... the oil coming out of the breather hole is milky.. I know I need to drain, clean and re-fill but I have some questions.
-How are my air lockers going to effect this process?Jeep Cherokee Forum - Post New Thread
-Without a drain plug, what steps to I take to pull drive shaft and drain (I.E: do I have to take it out of the transfer case?
-Is this do-able in a day if I had the right supplies.
And any write ups or sites that have Currie 9 inch tech sections would be great.
I will take all the two cents from everyone!
thanks guys

From my lack of knowledge on 9-inchers, i think you have to remove third member (i think that's what it's called) and it drains itself. I believe you have to remove the axle shafts to get that out.
As for the breather, just clean off the area and the fitting, apply some rtv around the threads of the fitting and put in. Take some jb-weld and put it around the fitting and it should stay put when it dries. Actually I bet the rtv will dry and hold the fitting just fine.

dont quote me on this but i believe all you have to do is disconnect the rear drive shaft from the axle. shouldnt affect your air locker at all since its just a normal fluid change..but yeah i would just do what muddeprived said for the breather hose, change the fluid and you should be set

I did a little research to expand my knowledge and figured it out. You gotta either pump it out (which most people do) or remove the diff (from the front of the axle). Removing the diff is better cuz you can inspect the internals but if it's a new axle I wouldn't worry about that and just pump it out. If you do decide to remove it, you gotta yank both axle shafts out.
Since you may have gotten water in there, I would pump it out, fill it up, drive a little, then re-do it again so you get most of it out.

just remove the differential be carefully when pulling it out thought they are kind of heavy and you do have to pull the axles out to get the center out all you do is remove the bearing retainers and out they come and for the breather hose just silicone as said

I would remove the third member and have a look at the internals. I'm sure that Currie 9 incher with ARB Airlocker is a spendy unit. Bottom line is get the damn water out of there ASAP, have a look at everything, get clean gear oil in there and fix the breather. Go Wheeling!!!!

Hey guys
I really appreciate all of the suggestions. I did pump it out today and refilled it. I also fixed the breather tube. I am just not experienced enough to pull the third member and deal with my air locker.
