I bet I'm not the first to ask this.

Not sure what chrome tape is? The correct stuff to use is heat reflective foil. Reflectix makes stuff like this (can find at Home Depot) but I have no idea if it suitable in an automotive application. An alternative/supplement is to shield between the exhaust and intake manifolds instead of just wrapping single injectors.
Do see if you can get the codes. Even if the blinky light has gone away they should be stored.

Doesn't it seem strange to anyone that a heat soak problem would appear all of a sudden... then go away? I would think an injector heat soak problem would be constant.
I'm voting for a failing CPS.

Sounds like initially a case of heat soak, and that it probably fouled out one of the spark plugs, causing your misfire and rich condition.
But these 4.0's are resilient and like to temporarily fix themselves from time to time.
You still need to figure it out. Change your spark plugs to start, that's never a bad thing to do.

I'll take the Jeep and have the guys at Advance check the code. I will report the code on here.
I found regular insulation with the aluminum backing at Lowes. It is a roll about 2 inches wide. Looks like it could be used - maybe.
I don't drive the Cherokee every day. It may be a few days before I can get to Advance - so I'm on "stand by" mode for a bit. I'll still check here though. Thanks for all the info fellas' - I'm on this like elephants on pygmies.

I'm going to familiarize myself with the existing foil on the manifold and try to determine how and where to shield the injectors as to not cause any additional situations. I'm wondering if anyone has done this ?. I don't think I want to wrap the injectors so they don't have any way for heat to go away from them but still to have them shielded. Maybe perforations with a straight pin thru the foil?
hey guys i got a 94 cherokee wit the 4.0L i can not get it to run it was running fine then shut it off n went to start it to move it n it wouldnt fire jus rolls over i got fuel and spark after a bit of crankin it over u can smell the fuel so i know the injectors are workin pulled all the pulgs cleaned em regapped them n all i got is a back fire now through the throttle body any ideas on what it may b checked timing as well still right on the money
Insulating the injectors can't hurt, if your going to Advance anyways:

I have / had the same issue all my heat shields are in place I found 1 injector body cracked it was # 3 iirc . I replaced all 6 injectors and wrapped the rail and injectors with some thick wrap left over from another project . I still have the issue occasionally .
I am thinking about getting a fuel rail from an earlier xj I have a theory here .
I think dead heading the fuel ( no return) lets the fuel boil in the rail.

We had a similar problem in our 2000 XJ. We were on the last part of a two hour road trip when the CEL flashed and started running really rough. Didn't have a code reader or any tools so we had it towed back home, (insurance made it completely free) ran the codes when we got home. Cylinder 1 misfire. Took off the coil pack and removed cylinder 1 spark plug and there was a chunk of gunk completely covering the electrode. Keep in mind our 2000 XJ has 221,000 miles at this point. I cleaned off the spark plug, put it back in, ran a can of Seafoam and then replaced the all of the spark plugs. Thing purrs now.
I'll check the plugs also--- When I first got the Jeep I was noticing the "different" way to change the plugs. I also noticed the way there are electric connectors going to the plugs. Is there anything I'm going to break if I don't get the clip or whatever removed in the proper fashion? I have a knack at breaking electronic connectors so I figured I better ask before I go out and try to gorilla the connections apart. This is an older Jeep you know and things like plastic or vinyl parts can kind of dry rot over time. I don't think this one was ever kept in a garage.

Heat soak is common and it would come and go. To avoid this altogether i wrapped my injectors with some insulated tubing.
If your going to change your plugs go with the cheaper ones. Dont let the parts slingers talk you into some bosch 10 thousand pronged lithium ion plugs. lol. Just buy autolites or what OE spec calls for. I Put those expensive plugs in one time and the jeep ran like crap. Took them out and put some good ole' champions in and it ran like a top.
On another note.. i thought that the metal "shields" on the intake mani were issued by chrysler as a recall thing so that junk doesnt fall on the exhaust mani. I see them hit or miss. They definetly arent on every xj. My 2000 doesnt have it. But my friends 2000 does. I guess either way it is technically a heat shield but what good is it doing ontop of the manifold. You would think if it was a heat shield it would be on the bottom of the intake mani bc hot air rises and all. - End rant. lol
