it might be advisable to have a haynes manual for your jeep handy if you don't already. mine has helped me plenty, not to mention the kind folks right here on this forum!

Exclamation issues w/ valve cover gasket and oil pressure sender/switch?

hey guys well the red beast is doing pretty good so far till earlier today my hubby smelled alot of burning oil, well its been like that for a week or so but not bad...till today...he took it into our reg. mechanic to find out it needs the gasket replaced soon plus the oil pressure sender/switch...its going to cost close to $300.00...my question is where is this oil pressure sender/ switch at? is it in a difficult location? the valve cover gasket may have to be done by our mechanic but just wanted to find out about this switch/sender?

The switch (sending unit) is by the oil filter. $300.00 to change a valve cover gasket and oil pressure switch is pretty high.

thats way to high... both are real easy... oil sending unit is on the pass side... down near the oil pan on the block closer to the firewall... pull the wire off and uncrew... real easy... valve cover gasket is just as easy... just unbolt and move things out of the way thats hanging over it vaccum lines, throttle cables yatta yatta... and take all the little bolts out around it... will pop right off... scrape all the old gasket off the head and valve cover so its nice and smooth... try not to let trash fall inside... if so get it out... then stick the new gasket on it making sure it stays where it needs to be... and get a rubber one... not a cork one... you will see why if yours is cork now and you have to scrape it all off... rubber most of the time just pulls right off...

yup today i went to look at it w/ hubby, he showed me where they "disconnected" it and its like you all said by the oil filter, ok that seems simple enough to fix...i was thinking of getting the rubber kind of gasket anyways...is there a special kit that comes w/ it or its just the gasket by itself? were very tight on budget at the moment, my next question is how long can the jeep withstand waiting for it to be fixed, the valve cover gasket that is? since i have no idea how long this may have been needed, im guessing as soon as possible...

as long as you keep oil at the proper hight on the dipstick then it can go forever...

Gasket should be about $35 for the pre-formed job (good gasket), maybe higher in NYC.

Sending unit will be about $30. Old one can be removed with a set of channel lock pliers.

Most parts stores would have both in stock.
