Default How to Siphon gas and Replace Fuel pump

Sadly on my maiden off roading voyage with my 97 Cherokee, I got too "buck" on several bumps causing the engine to stall. It would not refire and after some pressure testing and listening through the gas cap I believe I need to replace my fuel pump. Problem 1. How do I empty my full fuel tank? Put 15 gallons in right before the incident 2.what tools do I need and how do I replace the fuel pump. 9th day owner her =[

Have you verified this with a fuel pressure tester? They're like $20 at harbor freight.

What are the symptoms? Does it just crank and crank? You might be getting on gas due to a failed crankshaft position sensor.

The fuel pump is on the top of the fuel tank and you will have to take the tank down to replace it. You don't have to drain the tank to change the pump. Unless it is over the fill tube on the tank because gas will poor out when you take it off. Also it will make it alot lighter and easier to take down and put back. You shouldn't really need any special tools. When you turn the key to run you should be able to hear the pump run. You might want to check the wires going to the pump to make sure they are getting fire because it could be a wiring problem.

I tested the pressure with some sort of screw driver test I read up online, and I'm pretty sure it is the pump. I guess I hope it is not over the fill tube, I got 16 gallons of $4 a gallon. From the gas tank I do not hear the pump run, and also compared the sound to my friends 02 Wrangler. Thanks for the advice.

The symptoms are it cranks and is on the border of starting but will not turn over, my friend is convinced it is not getting gas. We check the wires and did not smell gas in them.

dont assume, and drop youre tank untill youre sure, more testing is needed you need to determine if power is going to the pump as was already mentioned, ive never done it so cant advise on that but perhaps a google search or someone else that knows will chime in

Yes more testing is in order. You do not want to drop the tank, change the pump and have the same problem.

Look at your pump, pin 1 a dk grn/wht wire is the power feed from the fuel pump relay. Connect a meter or test light to this pin. Turn the ignition switch to run. The pump should run for a few seconds. The meter or test light should show power going to the pump. If the meter or test light shows power but pump does not run, you have a bad pump. You can also run a fused wire from battery positive to this pin and the pump should run.

If the meter or test light does not show power going to the fuel pump, check your fuel pump relay. It may be bad and the cause of your problem.

After you verify that the pump is getting power and does not run then you can drop the tank and change the pump.

I've done a lot of Goggle searches, with little success. So after replacing the pump, I did not need to siphon but my bad girl will still not fire. We did a reading with a scanner to find that the crank position sensor was among the problems and after that we got gas to finally flow through the lines, but she still won't turn over. We tried replacing the spark plugs (needed to be done anyone since the previous owner clearly neglected it) thinking maybe the lack of spark could have been it, but no dice.

take your air filter off, spray some carb cleaner, try and start it if that doesn't work try hitting the bottom of the gas tank .if any of the two work it's your fuel pump .

Do you have spark at the plugs? The coil to cap wire? Power to the coil?

I already replaced the pump, wasn't it. I intially tried banging on the gas tank, no luck and actually Goggle gave me the carb cleaner idea, sadly no luck either. How I check for power to the coil?

I didnt drop my tank to change the pump out. I made sure i drained the tank to almost empty. Make sure to buy another tank seal. In the help section on the parts store buy a gasket set the has the ford and chevy o rings and lock. Thats what i used and no leaks.

asphalt cowboy. the gas tanks are different on 97-01 xjs, the pump nounts through the top not on the side like the 84-95 or 96 xjs. have you checked to see if youre distributor rotor is worn out???? do you have 49 psi of fuel pressure at the rail???
