my jeep breaks fine. just put on new pads... ha ha... depends on how you drive it... my experience is that, after the first water or mud hit that comes to the top of the fender flares, take out a credit card under the name first: X, last: J.
but i can tell you that it's almost never a big expensive repair. that's if YOU do the work. most guys here will confirm this, but we don't like an XJ that stays asleep. it's merely naps between chewing asphalt, gravel, mud, water, concrete, deer, skunk, possum and all else you throw in its way.

the only thing i have ever had problems with on my 89 cherokee is the dang starter! 35 bucks to replace it, and now she runs amazing.... other then that i have owned it for a year with no other breakdowns.

Only things that seem to break are wheel bearings and axleshaft u-joints. Other than that I can say it seems to be as resilient as my TJ was, that thing never broke till I was up to my chest in a pond!

Nothing so far has made it sit in a shop. Any maintenance I have done was preventive on my part. Brakes, hoses, etc. I spend every weekend tinkering with it looking for a blasted emissions leak that keeps that engine light on. I find something new or different to do to it while I search.

I had a 93 for 9 years, put something like 125k on it. Never left me stranded once. In those 9 years I replaced:

1 leaking fuel injector
Neutral Safety Switch
Oil filter mount O-ring
Radiator
Temp sensor (the one to the cluster gauge)
Calipers
leaking fueal pressure regulator
Probably had every coolant hose start leaking at some point
serpentine belt (just because it was getting brittle and squealed a lot)
Cat Convertor
Shocks

That's it, in 9 years. Seemed like I could only ever get about 18k out of brake pads...

Not bad compared to most vehicles, IMO.

Alternator. After mudding. Mechanic says he thinks it was just going to happen anyways, but also it was pretty much submerged through long 100ft puddles. My pic demonstrates. Also hit the puddles going 30-40mph. Shouldn't have. Besides that i'm fixing the rear main seal this weekend, because I don't like leaks lol.
