Default How much will a cherokee tow?

I am curious how much some of you other guys have towed. I have a 98 cherokee 4x4 and haven't towed much with it. I am thinking about getting a Polaris rzr in the future and wondered how well it would pull it down the road. Also what is the longest open trailer you would recommend to pull ? Thanks

Rated for 5,000 lbs. My trailer is 1,200 lbs tare. Length of trailer is not important.

My 90 tows my 18ft, 2400lb boat just fine, as long as I keep it at a reasonable speed. Yours should tow the Polaris w/o issue. I would not go bigger than 12ft on the trlr and keep the tongue wt lite.

The max tow rating of 5K lbs requires 4.0L motor, heavy duty cooling, auto tranny AND a auxiliary tranny cooler. The XJ is light duty at best......u can definitely tell when a mere 1500 lbs is back there. Remove any one of those 4 components drops the max tow rating to 3K lbs, iirc. By all means, allow extra stopping distance.

I pulled about 5500lbs in a uhaul from Louisiana to Montana when I got out of the Army. I got terrible milage and high winds/snow/ice across CO/WY/MT made it a miserable trip in a lifted XJ but it made it without breaking anything. The were semis lying on their side in some spots Wyoming so I don't feel to bad about it. Not something I would do again. No problem pulling pontoon boats/ rafts etc.

I towed a cherokee with another cherokee. Braking distance tripled...lol. Pulled it like a boss though.

I wouldn't want to tow much... I put a couple hundred pounds in my trunk once and it didn't like that.

What do consider terrible mileage? Does 10mpg seem right?
