Default How much mileage is too much mileage?

I've been going back and forth on buying an 01 Cherokee. It has 206,000 miles on it. Runs great, rust free, is in good shape overall. I just can't get over the mileage for some reason. I went and looked at another 01 with 160,000 miles and it was a car from Philly so it had its fair share of rust and didn't run nearly as well as this other one I'm looking at.

I'm not expecting to never have to put money into it but I'm just having trouble getting over the high mileage thing. I have an 87 Honda that has 158,000 miles. I usually search for low mileage cars. It's really, really difficult to find a low mileage Cherokee. And when you do.. sellers expect a premium for them.

Just tell me it's OK so I'll buy a damn Cherokee already..

You could always reset the odometer and forget about it..

just do yourself a favor and have them checked out. Brakes, trouble codes (to make sure the PO isnt pulling the battery cable just before you get there) and leaks around the trans and pan. I bought a pretty good jeep but I ended up dishing about another 1k for brakes and other stuff I didnt see.

X2 on what's above and check the compression before you buy it, if that's good i'd buy it, but still for the right price... What's he asking for it?

My buddy bought his 98 with about 205,000 and it runs like a champ, he did have to replace the fan and radiator within the first year, but the engine is solid. and he loves it

Yep, just give it a nice thorough inspection to make sure the PO isn't trying to pass anything off on you. A well maintained 200K+ XJ can often be a better truck than a poorly maintained one with 100K. There are people here with 300K+ miles on their XJs and they are still chuggin along! My XJ has 180K on it and it runs better now than it ever has! Just keep up with the basic maintenance and repair stuff that needs fixin as soon as possible, and your XJ will last darn near forever!

Wow!, You'd have to average 23K (a yr.) for 9 yrs, to hit that. Even though the I-6 can last a long time, With proper up-keep. (and your hoping, or taking a chance on the PO doing so) I myself would keep looking around. There's a ton of XJ's out there. (Makes me glad mine just hit 67K) JMO!

He's asking more than I know most would be willing to pay here. Seems they bring a premium in NC.. maybe it's just this area.. I search in Fayetteville, Raleigh and Charlotte. Makes no sense to me, 4x4 isn't even really needed down here unless you hit a trail. Nonetheless, I rarely see 97+ Cherokees for less than $3500, high miles or not. He was asking $3500. The other guy with the 01 with 164,000 miles on it was asking $3500 then raised it to $4500 (saw him re-list the car on CL last night) as he said that he was going off of 'Philly' prices. I looked at another 01 a few weeks ago with 150k miles and he was asking $4200 and unwilling to budge.

I was going to get this one for $3300 which is less than some much earlier models I've seen listed. Prices on used cars are just stupid in this area, but I really wanted to buy one before I moved to Indiana where I can forget about finding one without rust.

For a car that's so plentiful, I didn't expect it to take so long to find one.

I'm trying to be patient though. I think I'll hold out for a 97-99 and hope that I find one in good condition when I do.

they are pretty expensive everywhere but its cause they were the first real small suv and they were made right. every once in a while, a company will hit the mark perfect with a new model and it will be a historical vehicle. the cherokee is that. its like the mustang and the bmw 3 series. it caused waves through the auto industry because of how well it sold over its life span and its following.

I know what you mean. I've been looking for another XJ and they are all high priced in Ohio. I found a ZJ with 171,000 for $1500 so I bought that instead. I saw this one 01 XJ on e-bay and the bids were up to $18,000 and it was all stock. It only had like 300 miles and was never titled, but still. For good miles they are like 5 to 8 grand out here.

body has some rust, but driveability is not bad if you dont count the trans

Got this 2001 here in L.A. (so no rust) for $3,500 bucks, 150,000 miles and it's super clean, especially the outside.

206,000, geez, it's just gettin' broke-in, how about 804,000 on an XJ.
