So I know that all Jeeps for the most part leak oil. Especially around the valve cover. my 2000 Sport 4.0 might leak a little too much IMO. I could just be thinking its worse than it is. On the engine, it's running down all the way to the transmission and oil pan. I can also smell it burning off while and after it's running. When I park there's a good half dollar to a dollar bill size puddle. Probably a good 5-6 drops. I'm still kinda new to Jeeps and a slight hypochondriac if I see something out of the norm.

That's probably a little more than "normal". I'd check the VC gasket, oil filter adapter. And rear main seal. Mine leaks too, but definitely not to that degree.

Hey, as long as it's leaking you know it's got oil in it. Seriously though these things leak fluid..no biggie. Most of the time the oil leaks start at the valve cover gasket and/or oil filter housing adapter. Do some quick research and you'll see its pretty easy to replace both of these

Yeah it's definitely coming from the valve cover, not sure if it's coming from anywhere else yet. I just got it this weekend and have't had a whole lot of time to check everything over. It's been snowing and what not. Valve cover gasket is no biggie to change, not sure about the main seal and others. I've never attempted those before.

I mainly wanted to make sure what it is leaking is not bad or is what it thought being more than "normal."

Here. You tell us where it's leaking from:

Mine doesn't leak anything since I replace the faulty gasket...

...

Was there a point to this thread? Why haven't you replaced it?

The point was to find out if you guys thought it was out of the norm for a jeep to leak that much. Since I'm new and knowing that they leak I was curious. Yes I am going to be getting around to changing it. I just got it this weekend and haven't gotten around to it yet.

Neither does mine since I replaced the adapter's O-rings, valve cover gasket and torqued the pan bolts.

There is no NORMAL. There's the one you're looking at and an outline to guide you through the diagnostic procedure.

Not sure why people think its normal for an xj to leak anything. If it leaks, fix said leAk. I know my two recent leaks are thermostat gasket and 8.25 rubber plug. Before that no leaks.

Sounds like we are really lucky with our "normal" XJ......not even 1 drop on the garage floor.....knock on wood, fingers crossed, buy a lotto ticket.

Mine likes to come and go. Some days not a drop of oil, some days a very, very small puddle that doesn't concern me. Have checked the oil filter adapter, doesn't leak a bit - did the vcg with a felpro. Next year I'll be doing the oil pan/rms, which is really the only thing left. I'm definitely consuming a bit of oil as well as dripping a tiny amount, though - so I do seem to go through oil pretty quickly. Oh well. Once I do the pan/rms I will have done enough to it and will just live with it as is.

Mine only shows oil spots if I mis-pour when changing my oil....

mine doesn't leak anything. a vehicle leaking anything is the result of a gasket in use past its service life or a poorly installed replacement. pretty simple.

and no, this added comment has nothing to do with the price of eggs in china.
