Default How to flush coolant for stock 1990 Cherokee (closed radiator system)?

I have a stock 1990 Cherokee (Pioneer edition) which has the infamous (and pathetic) closed radiator system. My brother recently overheated it and drove it limping home. So, now I checked and I see little flakes of stuff in the bottom of the coolant reservoir bottle.

With that said, I want to do a full coolant flush and put in new coolant.

What's the best way to do a flush with this Cherokee? Any special equipment needed?

Thanks.

That's how you burping it after the flush. Good way to flush is use the prestone stuff. Follow the directions. When you drain it the easiest way is the lower radiator hose and the drain on the driver side of the block. Also I like to drain the system, take the heater hoses off and use a hose to flush that. Also do the same for the radiator and through the engine if you can. Then I fill the system with water and the prestone flush stuff and follow the directions and drain everything like I said through the rad hose and drain plug and use the hose to flush it all out again. Then fill it up, burping the air and your rockin. You don'thave to be that thorough that's just how I pike to do it. L

When you're doing this, replace the coolant bottle cap with the Volvo one, part number 703-1396 at Napa.

slick, what is the "prestone" flush that you talk about? Can you find me a product link?

Cruiser, thanks for the volvo cap info. So, you confirm that the Napa part you quoted is what I need? What is the price (doesn't show on their website).

Cause its easy to find. Some people say its hard to find the correct cap. Since I haven't had to replace mine I don't know.

Retails for $11.68. Got the part number and price right off my last Napa receipt.

For the poster who asked why:
22 PSI instead of 16 PSI like stock.
It holds on to the threads better than those crappy chinese caps we've been buying, even on a cheapy bottle.
It has a lower profile than the stock cap and when the bottle expands it's less likely to rub on the underside of the hood.

I got the Prestone flush kit, but I have NO IDEA how to connect it with my closed system. Do I need to splice a hose? Can anyone give me a step-by-step? Sorry.

Splice the fitting into the hose from the pressure bottle to the upper fitting on the pump.

Just to be sure before I splice....is this the hose (highlighted in yellowish glow)?

Also, is this the coolant temperature sending unit I need to remove for burping (highlighted in green glow)?

Lastly, does anyone know how many bottles of that Prestone super radiator cleaner I need to use for the 7hr flush?

P.S> Thanks Slick for the volvo cap advice! As you can see, I got it on the bottle now

That's the hose to use.
That's the temp SENDER you wanna remove.
And, you're welcome for the Volvo cap advice. LOL.

That is the correct hose and unit. Last time I did it I watched the temp gauge and when it shot up I revved it good a few times and it burped itself, probably due to the hole I drilled in the tstat. Taking that sending unit out is probably the best way to get the air out on a stock tstat though.
