I being stupid last week ripping around in 2wd and blew out the u joint on the rear diff, and sheared off the bolts in the yoke. Same thing happened to the front one a couple weeks ago, so now my jeep is sitting with zero wheel drive. Any ghetto ideas on how to rig it to get it about 10 miles home?

 

Basically what I have to work with is a u joint with no caps, and a yoke with no straps. Parts are ordered to fix it properly, but I can't afford a tow home

Where is the front driveshaft???


Pull the rear driveshaft, and put it into 4High... It will just be in front wheel drive. You need to take a red solo cup and duct tape it to the rear output shaft, so you wont loose all of your transfer case fluid.

 

That's how we got it to the end of the trail, but cops are real dicks around here, they wouldn't like us rolling through town like that

 

Thats the problem. I went out with 1 driveshaft and broke it. The same thing happened to the front yoke last week

 

As sketchy as this may sound, I'm thinking about tying what's left of the u joint onto the yoke with paracord, like lashing it on, it may work, right?

 

Dude if I was closer I would AAA your ***. Seriously, AAA is like 130 a year for free break down assist and free 100 miles of towing. 1 tow and it pays for itself. They will come get you unstuck, tow your **** home, give you free gas (5 gal, I believe) if you run out, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I get my AAA card from my mom for Christmas every year (have since I was 16). Best present ever since I've never owned a car or truck or Jeep under 10 years old.

Anyways, I don't think 550 cord will hold up to the stress. You said you could get the parts, why not just do the work where it sits right now? Or are you like strapped for time or in a place you can't work?

 

It's sitting along side of the road in a state forest, I'm worried about people messing with it, (smashing the windows, slashing tires, etc.). It could be a few more days at least before the parts come. I just want to get it somewhere safe

 

Idk about the 550 cord, I'm thinking if its wrapped around everything and tied properly I could limp it home, its strong stuff

 

cord then wrap some 100mph tape around it whsts the worst can happen ?

 

That was my thoughts, cord and tape it and maybe redo it a couple times on the way home. All it did the first time I lost it was dent the muffler

 

I think I am misunderstanding where you broke it. Like at the tcase sheared off the yoke? Or you still have yoke coming out and it busted at the first u joint?

I guess try 550 cord and tape that bad boy up like really good and go really really slow. It would just suck to mess it up more than it already is.

Are people really that ****ty around where you live?

 

Id risk it and take back roads home. Less cops. Just get someone to tow it with a strap.Or spend 40 bucks for a tow. ouch.. whatever you do dont leave it.

 

It was the diff yoke that broke, blew a u joint cap and it kept spinning and tore **** up. the bolts sheared off in the yoke, and its already been sitting for a few days
