They expand and contract, letting air in or out.

Rather than running the stock tube, I bought mine from north shore Offroad in Vancouver Canada

i wish i could do this mod to my 98 but there isn't any space behind the rear lights so i have to find a way to relocate it somewhere else

I finally did my breathers on my 2001. Didn't use a filter, but I think it will be ok. I ran it with the fuel fill lines and only needed to drill one hole.

He does have a point there. The air cooling will indeed contract. Having the extension tube turn and go down a bit might be the ticket to slow water getting in...(as opposed to a valve). Clever location!
