I have noticed considerable differences in sound after finally putting my XJ back together. Unfortunately I was unsuccessful in getting the dash completely off. I unhooked it but could not get it pulled back more than 8" inches at best. Does not give much room for sound dampening. But the rear cab is noticeably more quiet.

I downloaded some spl app today but am not sure how to calibrate it. The ride to work still registered on average 70db on the freeway. Vehicle is body lifted about 4" and the tires are pretty loud. Still, what I wouldn't give to silence that engine more. Below are some of the photos... roof was completely lined. Would still invest in some ensolite foam if I could get the damn dash off.

I too have tinnitus. My buddy also suffers from it. He tried this

http://www.quietrelief.com/

He had AMAZING relief. So much, I ordered some and once I get it I will post my results. My tinnitus was from 32 years of drumming for rock and roll bands and auto racing.

Thank you for your service and if you try the remedy I hope you have great results

Really? Not much of a difference? I ordered all this fatmat and i'm gonna be real sad if I put it in and I'm still going nuts from engine noise. Mine is not lifted or anything and is 76db at 70mph. It looks like you did put it in behind the dash, was it just not sealed or something?

Who me? I could get it somewhat behind the dash, but not in the most important of areas (center lower). The firewall damping would be far more effective if I could completely remove my dash and have full access to the firewall area. Also, by removing the engine, I could have full access to the engine side of the firewall. This would make a huge difference as most of the noise I get now come from the engine and the General Grabber AT2 tires. I also have a K&N cone filter and a flowmaster exhaust.

But even with that loud engine and those tires, I think 71db at 75mph must not be bad if you are raking in 70db with no lift and I assume no loud azz General Grabber AT2's. I just go the spl noise app, but I would be that before the install of the sound stuff, I was closer to 80db at the same speed. Also the seating area of my jeep is still absent of carpet. Its just the fatmat style stuff, and the King Frost foam roll for now.

To the OP...I'm in EOD currently and I completely understand what you are talking about with the ear ringing. By decreasing 'droning' noises, my ringing doesn't get as irritated. Why should you have to purchase a 'quiet' car because you experience ringing that so many of us in the military do. Screw buying a Prius and I say good luck to you!Drive whatever you want! You fought for that as trivial as it may seem. Thank you for your service and if I come across any tricks I will gladly let a brother in arms know.

Jhae2011: Have you checked the in cab sound level at idle with all windows closed?

Currently my truck when driving mostly produce noise cuz of the tires. Will probably change that to highway tires when I get the funds. Also, I like to drive with my windows cracked open instead of using the AC and believe it or not, having those window deflectors by WeatherTech helped: http://www.jcwhitney.com/dark-tint-i...d=d1163y2001j1

Hopefully this summer I can rhinoline inside and undercarriage of my truck and add some "dynomat" type. I also found some 1/4"-3/8" sound proofing material they use for sound studios. Might use those as underlining for the carpet :/

Yeah, it bounces around 43db during the day at idle, once the engine warms up. 71db when on the freeway but coasting. Its really the engine rev + wind noise coming from the front that makes the bigger difference. Not even the tires. When foot is on the gas at 75mph, the levels are around 76db, but when coasting at 75mp, it drops back to 70/71db.

Also, I wouldnt recommend the rhinoliner because im pretty sure it adds a thick layer of hard plastic when dry. That actually sounds worse.. it will make your Jeep easier to spray out if you do that stuff. I am looking at m*** loaded carpet for the front. Might throw some ensolite down but I just really want to get that dash off. The front p***enger lower weather stripping allows a hiss too on mine.

I'm actually going to use this: http://durabakcompany.com/
When dry it feels like hard rubber. Should absorb some sound and protect the metal. About the noise coming from up front..well, we do drive a brick and a lot of it probably comes from when air goes under the truck. I'm no expert in aerodynamics but I just got myself a front skid plate. Hopefully that will help smooth out the air going under instead of hitting all the suspention/steering components at higher speed.
I might just be talking out of my (_!_) but worth a shot

Just to let you guys know on the road noise elimination. If you have excessively trimmed fenders a section of pool noodle trimmed and fit inside the fender works awesome.

- if you have a manual transmission, there is an inner (lower) boot for the shifter handle, that is usually deteriorated to the point of being useless, letting in a lot of engine/transmission/road noise. If you pull up the (visible) shifter boot, then you can see the lower boot - it seals between the body tunnel to the shifter handle. I believe these are no longer available, but one from a TJ or YJ (I forget which) fits not too bad, just need to make new holes for self-tapping screws. If you need the part number, I can look it up.

Actually www.factorychryslerparts still carries both the upper and lower shift boots. http://www.factorychryslerparts.com/
