Vaccum lines runnihg to the egg shaved vacum canister in the front bumper passenger side. My understanding is that it controls your vents

You have a vacuum leak somewhere. Defrost is the default mode.

As mentioned, the plastic vacuum reservoir behind the right front bumper is a good place to start looking...they crack easily if the bumper has been hit.

If you don't have the egg canister, you can just hook the vacuum lines together for the time being until you pick one up to see if it's your problem. There are plenty of people who have just connected the lines together and said screw the canister with no problems.

i had the same problem on my 89 cherokee. The black vac line coming from where the heater hoses connect to the firewall was cut, so i just got some rubber hose, and fixed it.... it took me all of 2 minutes, and bam... problem fixed.

Check the line that runs between the battery and fender. It tends to rub on the battery and puts a hole in it.That line will also effect your cruise control too if you have it.
