I just bought a 1992 XJ 4.0 HO auto with 176K miles. Sometimes when I start it up I hear lifter noise. It will go away in 2-3 min and sometimes 5min. I have good oil psi...65psi cold and 40psi hot. The PO was using 15W40 Amsoil w/ amsoil EA filter. Temp outside is 20-30 deg F. Is this common with the lifter noise and should I put 10W40 in it?

sounds like normal start up, just a few seconds until ur 02 sensor can start reading! As for the oil I've always used 10w 40 in my XJ...

 

Thats not normal at all, every jeep I ever had made lifter noise all the time.

 

OK thanks guys! This morning had some noise when I first started it. Went inside to get ready for work. When I came out noise was still there. When I touched the door handel to open the door the noise stoped!
I must have the "Magic Touch!"
