I have a 92 Jeep Cherokee 4.0l inline 6 auto 4wd. I rarely drive it outside of the summer months. I drove it the other day to work and on the way home I started experiencing drivability problems followed by a cel. I do not have a obd code reader... So I used the key on to get the codes. I received 12, 41, 55. Those codes are for an alternator related problem I had in August and do not apply to my current issues. My question is... If possible without a obd code reader can you clear the current codes? I've driven it twice since then and I can get the light to come on in a matter of a few minutes. I am not a auto technician but I am 100% positive it's not related to my alternator after performing a charging systems check out of the Haynes book. Aside from using a obd code reader I can check just about anything else. Thanks in advance.

Disconnecting the battery for a few minutes should work, although it seems odd that it would be throwing a code for a problem that has been corrected. Are the alternator related codes the only ones that came up?

go to advance auto, buy a $75 code reader, proceed to clear codes all day long ...it's easy as hell and only takes 2 minutes.

if your gonna disco. the battery leads, then take both pos and neg off. then touch just the leads together for a few sec. then if you can, just leave the leads disco. for as long as you can. i went outta town for 7 days, it was cold, so i pulled the battery. when reinstalled, none of my check engine light **** was on anymore, and it stayed that way for a few months. worked pretty well for free! good luck! i guess that a code reader is a more legit option.. but i really like free

i tried just disconnecting battery leads over night to see if codes would go away but they did not, kinda nervous to cross battery leads bad experince with another car and blew ECU and advanced only selld OBD2 code readers .... im throwing a code 22, and 23 , did everything nessisary to fix both several times but need to clear codes and go from there i guess and free is for me also, any thoughts?

Go to your local auto parts store. They should be able to use their code reader and clear them for you for free.

sorry misunderstood the method there of clearing codes, i disconnected terminals and touch ground to prositive wires for 30 seconds, it did not clear any codes i have code 22 and 23 just driving it everyday to see if they clear out on there own after 50 starts

ok KISS ! 1.)throwing stupid codes 2.) cant get ride of them 3.) tried disconnecting battery terminals and touching them, left them disconnected 8 hours. 4.) nothing happened. 5.) what else works? 6.) auto parts stor deos not have OBD1 code readers........

92? Whenever you turn the key OFF you automatically clear the codes.

If they come back the problem still exists - it's resetting again.

Touching cables together is only an internet rumor.

ok well it was free rumor and worth a shot haha i figured much anyway, i disconnected battery again last night for about 10 hours and nothing, my buddy is getting me code reader from work today so bam! hopefully problem solved!
