Id like to know if my fuel pump was actually pumping fuel myself, so I'd rent a fuel pressure tester and see if it's actually doing just that.

Try bypassing the ballast first.

Okay, time to "rent" a fuel pressure gauge. You can rent them from AutoZone* or O'Reilly's.

*I wouldn't recommend replacing your fuel pump with one from AutoZone. They sell AirTex and AirTex are $#!Te. Get it from NAPA or find someone who sells Bosch.

Agreed, pick up a fuel pump and kill two birds at the same time. Hope it works for you.

ok got me a test gage from Vatozone, hooked it up, cranked it and had 0 pressure

also tested the plug going to the pump for voltage and got 6.58volts

so now my question is should i get Carter brand from my local Napa which costs 75$ with a sock or Bosch which costs 110$

or just one from Vatozone for 89$ with lifetime warranty?

6.58 volts with resistor bypassed don't think that's enough juices test b4 and after by pass connection first .

I'm on my phone and can't see a profile so I don't know what year you have, but maybe you just have a clogged fuel filter?

Could be bad or you just have a bad blockage somewhere or the injectors aren't working etc. Did you spray some starting fluid in the intake just to see it fire up? That would confirm a fuel delivery problem is to blame but I guess air and 0 psi fuel pressure already confirms that.

I've heard no horror stories about Carter. Bosch is obviously the most popular and there's a reason for that but I would guess that you'd be fine with a Carter.

A clog is certainly possible but the odds suggest it's the fuel pump. Mostly because I've never read of a clog in the fuel line or filter causing a fuel pressure reading of zero. I have, however, read a hundred accounts of a failed fuel pump causing it.

I just climbed under mine and probed the fuel pump plug. I get a constant 6.84v on the center pin and an initial 12v on the outer pin but within a second or two I hear the click of a relay (somewhere?) and the voltage drops to 0 on the outer pin. Center pin remains at 6.84v.

That's right, the jeep hasn't started so it's been either turned off probably by the ASD relay ( just guessing don't have a schematic) or the pump pulses on/ off. Your pump is working as it should.
