I just did my control arms, easiest way is to use a torch (oxy/act) or even just the small propane only ones. Heat the sleeve till the bonding agent releases, ( you will know because they start hissing) then just tap them out. cleanup is a breeze this way.

 

Well, I've tried drilling tons of holes and other stuff and nothing. Off to HF to get a hole saw. I've been working on these darn bushings since 9am. WTF?! And now for some odd reason the darn bolt won't bolt back on to the body to hold the sway bar!
I think my Jeep is mad at me for some reason.

 

Oh ya, than I found out today too that the spare tire in the truck of my Saturn split at the tread but still has air in it. Crappy weekend so far.

 

A torch sounds like fun. How long before the bonding agent releases?? The heat won't warp anything??

 

Loosen the links at the axle, that will help with lining up the sway bar mounts on the frame.
Maybe try the torch method to get the rubber out. If you use the hole saw, make sure you securely hold the arm and hold the drill with your left hand so you don't break your wrist when the bit gets hung up.

 

only takes about 10 seconds to get them to release with the torch, you really dont get enough heat to it to warp anything. Thats 10 seconds with the big torch, probably take a couple minutes with a propane torch. The best thing is that the sleeves are 98% clean when you use the torch method.

 

Ok. So the hole saw didn't work. Never saw a drill smoke before. Kinda cool, but didn't remove the bushings. Gonna try a blow torch next. Why can't they just sell the sleeves by them selves w/o the bushings?! All day and no play cause I was trying to get these darn bushings out. Man I love working on cars. Looks like my XJ kicked my butt in again today. I'm gonna go get me a beer.

 

WOW!! Bought a nice new blow torch just to find out that it just doesn't work. Blows out gas but won't spark or even hold a straight flame. When I put a lighter in front, the flame goes off to the sides no matter what the adjustments are. Oh well, back to the return tomorrow.

 

for the torch not lighting problem, just barely open the valve then light it. They wont light with a lot of pressure coming out it just blows out the flame. And the fire wrench is the best way(not enviromentally friendly way)to remove the rubber. I do tons of poly kits on muscle cars and a few jeeps and fire is good. I always start b getting the outter shell red hot then point the flame through the sleeve in the center. Hope that helps little. PS the cheap torches are not regulated the regulator is the valve.
