How can i open my rear hatch from inside?

Would unbolting the hinges at the top help?

i dont thing the hinges can be removed from the outside

definitely not on the 97+ as they're internal, not sure on the older ones. never actually removed one. but they are external hinges on those years. but maybe the nuts are inside...

I'm having the opposite problem. I opened my rear hatch yesterday and now I can't close it. The latch is stuck and won't budge, so my rear hatch looks like it's closed but anybody could get in my XJ if they wanted to.

try spraying some pb blaster on the mechanism to see if it will free up.

If you locked your jeep while the hatch is open, you wont be able to shut it because the lock mechanism is in the way

Manually unlock it with your key and try to close it.

I had the same problem a couple months back
